Readability Scores

The Flesch-Kincaid readability score measures how easy your text is to read. Aim for a score of 60-70 (easily understood by 13-15 year olds) for general web content. Academic writing can be lower.

Improving Readability

  • Use short sentences (average 15-20 words)

  • Prefer common words over complex ones

  • Avoid jargon unless your audience expects it

  • Use active voice more than passive

  • Break up long paragraphs

Web Accessibility

  • Use proper heading hierarchy (H1 > H2 > H3)

  • Add alt text to images

  • Use sufficient color contrast

  • Make links descriptive ("Read the full guide" not "click here")

  • Use plain language when possible

Check your content's readability with our word counter, which includes a built-in readability score calculator.
