Turning Good Writing into Great Writing
The Revision Mindset
Revision literally means "seeing again." Put your draft aside for at least a few hours (ideally overnight) before revising. Fresh eyes catch problems that tired eyes miss.
Big-Picture Revision
- Does your thesis clearly state your argument?
- Does every paragraph support your thesis?
- Are paragraphs in the most logical order?
- Have you addressed potential counterarguments?
- Is your evidence convincing and well-integrated?
Paragraph-Level Revision
- Does each paragraph have a clear topic sentence?
- Are transitions smooth between paragraphs?
- Is there enough evidence for each claim?
Sentence-Level Editing
- Eliminate wordiness and redundancy
- Vary sentence length and structure
- Replace vague words with specific ones
- Check for grammar, spelling, and punctuation
