Professional editors don't try to fix everything in one read-through. They use multiple focused passes, each addressing a different aspect of the writing.


Pass 1: Content and Structure



  • Is the main argument clear and well-supported?

  • Is the organization logical?

  • Are there any missing pieces or unnecessary sections?

  • Does the conclusion follow from the evidence?


Pass 2: Paragraphs and Flow



  • Does each paragraph have a clear purpose?

  • Are transitions smooth?
