How to Write Better Paragraphs

February 06, 2026 · 1 min read · 10 views

The paragraph is the basic unit of organized writing. A well-structured paragraph develops one main idea with supporting evidence and clear transitions.

The TEEL Structure

  • Topic sentence: States the paragraph's main point

  • Explanation: Expands on the topic sentence

  • Evidence: Provides supporting data, quotes, or examples

  • Link: Connects back to your thesis or transitions to the next paragraph

Paragraph Length

Academic paragraphs typically run 100-200 words. Online content paragraphs should be shorter (2-3 sentences) for readability. Avoid both one-sentence paragraphs (usually underdeveloped) and wall-of-text paragraphs (hard to read).

Cohesion Techniques

  • Use pronouns to refer back to previously mentioned nouns

  • Repeat key terms for emphasis

  • Use transition words to show relationships between ideas

  • Maintain consistent point of view within each paragraph
