The paragraph is the basic unit of organized writing. A well-structured paragraph develops one main idea with supporting evidence and clear transitions.
The TEEL Structure
- Topic sentence: States the paragraph's main point
- Explanation: Expands on the topic sentence
- Evidence: Provides supporting data, quotes, or examples
- Link: Connects back to your thesis or transitions to the next paragraph
Paragraph Length
Academic paragraphs typically run 100-200 words. Online content paragraphs should be shorter (2-3 sentences) for readability. Avoid both one-sentence paragraphs (usually underdeveloped) and wall-of-text paragraphs (hard to read).
Cohesion Techniques
- Use pronouns to refer back to previously mentioned nouns
- Repeat key terms for emphasis
- Use transition words to show relationships between ideas
- Maintain consistent point of view within each paragraph
