Understanding Plagiarism

1 min read

What Counts as Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work, ideas, or words as your own. It includes both intentional dishonesty and unintentional failure to cite properly.

Types of Plagiarism

  • Direct plagiarism: Copying text word-for-word without quotation marks and citation

  • Mosaic/patchwork plagiarism: Mixing paraphrased content from multiple sources without attribution

  • Self-plagiarism: Submitting your own previous work for a new assignment without permission

  • Accidental plagiarism: Forgetting to cite, incorrect citation format, or inadequate paraphrasing

  • Contract cheating: Having someone else write your work

Why It Matters

Plagiarism undermines the value of your education, disrespects original authors, and can result in failing grades, academic probation, or expulsion. In professional contexts, it can lead to lawsuits, job loss, and reputational damage.
