Argumentative Essay


Takes a position on a controversial topic and supports it with evidence. Requires addressing counterarguments. Most common in college writing.


Expository Essay


Explains a topic objectively using facts, statistics, and examples. No personal opinion. Common types include process essays, compare/contrast, and cause/effect.


Narrative Essay


Tells a story, usually from personal experience. Uses vivid details, dialogue, and reflection. Common in creative writing and college applications.


Descriptive Essay


Paints a picture using sensory details. Focuses on a person, place, object, or experience. Emphasizes showing rather than telling.


Analytical Essay


Examines a text, idea, or issue by breaking it into components and evaluating them. Common in literature, film, and social science courses.
